Thursday
27th September - Walking Tour of Beacon Hill. An inside
look at 19th century Beacon Hill with lunch. (10.30-3.00pm
- meet in hotel lobby at 10.00am)
Explore the treasures of this richly endowed area with a
guide who will lead the way as we walk through modern day
Back Bay with its plethora of shops and bistros and magnificent
old buildings that have found new life in this wonderful
residential and sophisticated business community as you
explore the Back Bay's rich 19th century architectural history.
Notable sites along the way will include Trinity Church,
"New" Old South and the Boston Public Library.
After a guided stroll through the nation's oldest Botanical
Garden, the Boston Public Garden, we will begin our exploration
of Beacon Hill, one of Boston's most charming and historic
enclaves, on foot.
As your guide leads you through this charming area, you
will see steep cobblestoned streets, brick townhouses, gaslights
and hidden gardens. We will also visit the "Flat"
of the Hill, the charming area that is built on the banks
of the Charles River and will visit the lesser known side
of the Hill, discovering the narrow alleyways and courtyards
where fugitive slaves were hidden during the heyday of the
Underground Railroad.
The tour of the Hill will culminate in a visit to a wonderful
early 19th century townhouse on Beacon Hill where guests
will have a unique glimpse into the domestic life of the
19th and early 20th centuries on Boston's historic Beacon
Hill. This Federal, Greek Revival styled house is filled
with precious possessions, artwork, oriental rugs and furniture
from across the globe, including works of America's foremost
sculptor of the 19th century, Augustus St. Gaudens. As interesting
as the house, its owner, Miss Rose Standish Nichols, was
an author, suffragette, life long pacifist and women's rights
activist. She supported herself as a landscape architect.
None of which were the norm for a 'proper' 19th century
lady. The Nichols house and museum is part of the historic
legacy of one of the most famous neighbourhoods in America.
Lunch will be at the little French Bistro on the Hill,
voted Best of Boston for two years running.

Friday
28th September - Back Bay Gallery stroll along Newbury Street
& lunch (10.00am to 3.00pm - meet in hotel lobby at
9.30am)
Boston has a thriving Arts Community with galleries, communities
of artists, lofts and studios juxtaposed between buildings
in the neighbourhoods throughout Boston, Cambridge, Somerville
and surrounding towns. Boston has so many institutions granting
college degrees to artists of all kinds.
The guide will greet our group in the Back Bay at 10:00am,
and begin a walking tour to three Back Bay Art Galleries:
We'll visit the venerable Vose Gallery, the oldest family-owned
art gallery in the country. Run by the same family for five
generations, the gallery began modestly as an art supply
store in Providence in 1841. Over 28,000 paintings have
passed through this family's gallery since 1896; a great
many of which hang in over 145 museums and private collections
throughout the world. We'll enjoy refreshments at the gallery,
hear anecdotes about the perils and pleasures of running
this exciting family business and view the present collection.
Today the gallery handles American paintings of the 18th,
19th and 20th centuries along with a special gallery committed
to living artists.
The next gallery on Newbury Street is the Copley Society
(CoSo) which is the oldest non-profit art association in
the US. The organization has been promoting artists and
the visual arts since 1879 when John Singer Sargent was
one of their members. Today the Copley Society, with 700
artist members, holds 18 exhibitions a year following its
mission to offer opportunity to both established and (often
young) emerging artists who have yet to find opportunity
at a gallery or museum. CoSo is committed to the public
support of visual arts in New England and beyond.
A third gallery will be chosen based upon what is being
shown at the Copley Society in September, 2007. We would
like to present something non-representational, abstract
and edgy using mixed media, since Vose is old-school, and
the shows at the Copley Society vary according to their
mission.

Saturday
29th September- City tour (10.00am to 3.45pm - meet in lobby
at 9.45am) - Boston by 'Duck' vehicle, walking tour &
Italian lunch in the North End
Meeting at 9.45am, our journey begins when a chartered
'Duck' pulls up to the Langham Hotel. We will be met at
our hotel by our guide who will board us onto the Duck.
Our guests are in for the ride of their life on this authentic
renovated World War II amphibious landing vehicle. Our 'Conducktor'
will take us on a tour of Boston, pointing out highlights
along the Freedom Trail and other famous landmarks, culminating
in a splashdown into the Charles River, providing another
fun and unique perspective of Boston.

Boston has grown from a narrow peninsula in colonial times
to a thriving, cosmopolitan metropolis. As we meander through
the various neighbourhoods and environs of Boston old and
new, our guide will bring 17th, 18th and 19th century Boston
alive, pointing out the countless historical landmarks and
architectural monuments of the past, as well as the 20th
and 21st century skyscrapers that have so radically altered
the original Shawmut Peninsula. We'll view the palatial
mansions and churches of the Victorian Back Bay, the charming
Beacon Hill streetscapes and the many colonial landmarks
of the Freedom Trail.
Following the waterfront, past the site of the Boston Tea
Party, our Duck will drop us off at the edge of the North
End, one of the oldest Italian communities in America, and
one of the most historic neighbourhoods of Boston. Since
the 17th century, the North End has been a centre of commerce
and colonial housing for the "latest" group of
immigrants. Now a vibrant and exciting area, the North End
is the heart of Boston's "Little Italy". Its streets
are a juxtaposition of Revolution era churches, historic
buildings, famous colonial residents' homes and modern day
restaurants and cafés. Led by the guide, we'll proceed
on foot through the narrow, winding streets of the North
End to Paul Revere Mall where we will relive the events
that sparked the Revolution with a visit to the Old North
Church. After a morning Duck Tour and a walking tour of
the North End, we will have private room lunch at a local
North End Italian favourite.
Lunch Menu
Red & White Wine
Appetisers:
Ceasar Salad
Crispy Italian breaded calamari with lemon and
a side of marinara sauce
Pasta Course:
Lobster raviolis served with chunks of lobster meat,
in a lobster cream sauce
Dessert and Coffee:
Miniature Italian Pastries; Espresso & Cappuccino

After lunch our guide will walk us back to Quincy Market,
America's oldest marketplace. We will have an hour amid
the hustle and bustle to meander through this vibrant landmark
and wind among the shops, outdoor restaurants and bars and
vendor carts before the guide walks us back to the Langham
Hotel. For those who wish to stay and enjoy the marketplace
or head over to Long Wharf for a boat cruise, the walk to
the hotel is a short one.
(PLEASE NOTE: This tour is limited to a maximum of 32
persons on a "first come first served basis",
because the Duck has a limited seating capacity)
Cost per person: £85.00
